Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Arusha to Tarangire National Park

After an early morning pick-up from your hotel in Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport, you will drive to Tarangire National Park (approximately 2 hours). Upon arrival, you will head straight into the bush for your first game drive. The park is famous for its spectacular panoramic views, sprawling savannah, and the life-giving Tarangire River. Enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated site overlooking the river. In the afternoon, continue exploring to spot lions, leopards, and the park's legendary elephant herds. As the sun sets, head to your budget campsite or tented lodge just outside the park for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 2

Full Day Game Drive in Tarangire

Wake up to the sounds of the wild and enjoy breakfast at the camp. Today is dedicated to a full day of exploring Tarangire's rugged wilderness. You will pack a picnic lunch to maximize your time, driving deep into the southern part of the park where fewer tourists venture. Visit the Silale Swamps, a favorite haunt for elephants, and marvel at the ancient, towering baobab trees that dot the landscape. Birdwatchers will be in paradise here. In the late afternoon, return to your camp for dinner, swapping stories of the day's sightings around the campfire.

Day 3

Tarangire to Lake Manyara National Park

After breakfast, leave Tarangire behind and drive to Lake Manyara National Park (approximately 1.5 hours). You will descend into the Great Rift Valley, where the park's dramatic scenery unfolds. Enjoy a game drive through the groundwater forest, keeping your eyes peeled for the famous tree-climbing lions lounging in the acacia branches. The alkaline lake's edge is often tinged pink with thousands of flamingos, and you'll also spot hippos, giraffes, and enormous troops of baboons. Enjoy a picnic lunch inside the park before heading to your budget campsite near the bustling village of Mto wa Mbu for dinner and overnight.

Day 4

Lake Manyara to Ngorongoro Crater

After a relaxed morning and breakfast, you will drive up the spectacular Rift Valley escarpment to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You'll arrive at your budget campsite located right on the crater rim in time for lunch. Take in the breathtaking views of the caldera below shrouded in mist. In the afternoon, you can relax at the camp, take a guided walk along the rim, or visit a local Maasai village (optional). Enjoy a hot dinner and a restful night's sleep—the highland air here is wonderfully cool.

Day 5

Ngorongoro Crater Descent & Return to Arusha

Rise early for a breathtaking sunrise over the crater rim. After breakfast, descend the steep 600-meter track onto the crater floor (260 km²). This is your Big Five day! The crater holds one of the highest densities of lions in Africa, alongside large herds of wildebeest and zebra, endangered black rhinos, and massive-tusked elephants. You'll enjoy a picnic lunch near the hippo pool at Ngoitokitok Springs. In the early afternoon, you will ascend the crater and drive back to Arusha, arriving in the late afternoon for a drop-off at your hotel or the airport, marking the end of your epic budget adventure.
